South Haven Michigan, Blueberry Capital of the World

South Haven Michigan may be known as the “Blueberry Capital of the World”, but there is a whole lot more than blueberries going on here. (not to take anything away from the blueberries, we love them!)

South Haven Michigan is in the county of Van Buren.  South Haven has roughly 5,000 people in living in the city, with another 72,000+ in the rest of the county.

The climate is somewhat affected by Lake Michigan, having lake-effect snowfall in the winter, and temperature tempered by the water of Lake Michigan in the summer, making it bearable on the hottest summer days.  We get an average of 60 inches of snow in the winter and about 35 inches of rain throughout the year.

Van Buren county gets approximately 1.5 million or more visitors a year.  The population in South Haven swells from 5,000 up to  10,000 or 15,000  people in the summer on holiday and festival weekends.  A good time is had by all.

Of course, South Haven is know for it’s white sugar sand beaches.  There are several beaches one can visit totally free of charge (unless you park there) but you can walk in, plop down your blanket, and run willy nilly into the waters of Lake Michigan.  It can be invigorating when it’s chilly, but summer months find the waters very friendly.

The North Beach, off from North Shore Drive, is hugely popular with the younger crowd, plus they have volley ball net you can rent.  It is probably the most busy of the beaches.  The South Beach seems to be more family oriented and has access to the South Pier where the South Haven Lighthouse is located.

There are several more beach access points in South Haven, and some in the surrounding townships.  South Haven is fantastic for the ease of Lake Michigan beach access.  Not many other lakeside cities can beat this.

Do you enjoy picnics?  Well there are several parks and picnic areas you can spread out your blanket and chairs, cook up some burgers or hot dogs and enjoy a good time.  Stanley Johnson Park on Dyckman Street, just across the drawbridge, has beautiful Black River and marina views, is a family favorite.  Another is Packard Park on North Shore Drive where you have Lake Michigan Beach access.

But not everything revolves around the beaches and parks.  There is a variety of activities to do in South Haven and the surrounding areas.  Activities from bike trails to ice skating to pick your own fruit, and many, many more to choose from. Do you like antiques, art galleries, unique shops, sailboat charters, museums, golfing and even mini golf?  South Haven and the surrounding area has them.

South Haven has lodging and restaurants to service the crowds.  Top notch service and food is known throughout the region.  So head on over to South Haven Michigan and relax and enjoy yourself, your family and friends.

South Haven Lighthouse

Did I mention that we have awesome marinas and a great safe harbor?  Of course South Haven has a spot for your boat at one of the many marinas on the Black River, including the  three City of  South Haven Marinas.  You can launch your boat at the Black River Marina or any of the close by private marina launches.  There is also some great fishing offered by several fishing charter services in South Haven.  Catch some nice big Lake Trout, Salmon, or fine eating Perch.

The Foundry, an old converted factory, at 422 Eagle Street, right downtown, is an awesome intimate venue for music, plays and several other arts.  The variety of quality music acts that are brought into this venue, in little South Haven, is unbelievable!  You will enjoy the show!
